Cultural Forum of Cerveira (Vila Nova de Cerveira, PT)

Locus in quo - which means "the place where something happens" - is the general title the artist gave to a body of works based on a particular theme: the sense of places. The project consists of three audio/video installations (Pesa, Cá and Birdsoundcage) and a concert performance (Oikos). These components function both as interconnected, independent works and, as a single cohesive work.
Pesa (“nest” in Estonian) is a three-channel video installation conceived in response to a site-specific performance that Manuela Barile developed at Moks, an artist residency in Estonia between September and October 2008. It consisted on building a nest in several places where the artist felt a sense of belonging (the abandoned house, the abysses of the lake, the rock near the pond, etc). Pesa describes the approach of a person who leaves with sadness and deep awareness the place to which he is attached, to set off in search of his new "home." Pesa is a project dedicated to the house, to the house of our childhood and to all the houses we have abandoned during our life. It is an interrogation on the feeling of abandon and melancholia. The sound composition is made by: sounds of the performer’s voice recorded live in places where the nests were constructed and then abandoned, field recordings made in the places described above and an abstract of an Estonian traditional song about the theme of the abandon.
Cá is a two-channel video installation developed as a consequence of the artist travels since March 2009 in search of abandoned villages in the region of São Pedro do Sul (Portugal), where she is been living since 2006. The abandoned villages are places with a strong identity, are places alive even if they are uninhabited, even if the nature has gradually absorbed them. They are places still alive because full of memory. They are a bridge with the past ... our past. The artist aim was to trace, catch and interrogate the signs of life and memory where everything seems over. Tracking the signs of memory means for her to take back our roots to reconnect us to a sense of authenticity that is being extinguished. The sound composition is made by: sounds of the performer’s voice recorded live in the abandoned villages using a binaural microphone; sounds of the abandoned villages; sounds of other villages (like the sound of a celebration in a public square, of a window opening and closing); abstracts of traditional songs of the region where there are the abandoned villages (S. Pedro do Sul, Portugal)
Birdsoundcage is a sound and video installation. Is a cage for birds recreated through the medium of sound in an empty and sterile room. Inside of it, there is a body flopped to the ground, that in order to survive decides to make a custom-made cage made by prostheses. The prostheses are obtained setting white-patched twigs of wood on her lower and upper limbs. The organic matter, with which the prostheses are made, is the rest of a nest, a place of the past that no longer exists.

A performance nasce da leitura das Cartas Portuguesas da Soror Mariana Alcoforado e das Novas Cartas Portuguesas de Maria Teresa Horta, Maria Isabel Barreno e Maria Velho da Costa. As da primeira autora escritas entre Dezembro de 1667 a Junho de 1668, as das três segundas, não assinadas, datam de 1971.
Tomando como ponto de partida duas cartas das 3 Marias, a Segunda Carta II e Freira Ensanguentada, ponho em prática os diversos exercícios propostos, da vingança à paixão pela paixão, sem pretexto senão o seu próprio exercício. A minha paixão é o mundo o meu exercício a arte e o objecto qualquer.
A performance revisita a paixão da mulher na nossa sociedade contemporânea, da paixão pela paixão à paixão pelo mundo. O exercício vai do privado ao público. Os objectos serão variados.
Porque o objecto da paixão é mesmo pretexto, pretexto nele e através dele, definirmos, e em que sentido, o nosso diálogo com o resto. Vejamos: o que nos resta é o mundo, e o tema é a paixão. (NCP)
Usando partes das referidas cartas e textos criados para o efeito a performance fará uso da palavra oral e escrita, da acção sobre o corpo e ainda de imagens desenhadas e projectadas no espaço performativo. Este espaço será intimista, com o público sentado em redor da performer formando um rectângulo que delimitará às acções e ao mesmo tempo confinará a performer.

We will present our new project, Master and Margarita, an audiovisual performance inspired by Bulgakov's novel. The visual style of Video Jack's Master and Margarita brings together a visual collage of photographic and drawn elements into interactive animations, influenced by Soviet-period imagery. The surreal, almost demential, universe of Bulgakov is captured graphically. In sonic terms, the references are Igor Stravinsky, Kurt Weil, Can, Tom Waits, Einstürzende Neubauten, Pan Sonic and Vladislav Delay.

2. HONORABLE MENTION AWARD @ FUTURE PLACES 2009
Video Jack won a 1st Honorable Mention award at Future Places 2009 festival, (Porto, Portugal), for our “Master and Margarita” performance.
What the jury said:
“The first honorable is Master and Margarita by André Carrilho and Nuno Correia of Video Jack. Their performance piece mixes music, video, and digital technology to give a fresh interpretation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s classic book about Stalinist Russia. This ever-evolving piece reinforces our understanding of how narratives change every time they are performed and every time they are re-visited.”
The jury was comprised of Hught Forrest (South by Southwest festival), Karen Kocher (University of Texas at Austin) and Cristina Sá (Universidade Católica Portuguesa).
First and second prize winners were, respectively “Outhouse” and “Oporto-Brooklyn Bridge”. “Wonderland” won the 2nd honorable mention.

You are invited to participate in the sixth annual Symposium on Computational Aesthetics that will take place in London England on 14-16 June 2010. CAe is co-located with Computer Graphics International and co-sponsored by the Computer Arts Society.

Computational Aesthetics bridges the analytic and synthetic by integrating aspects of computer science, philosophy, psychology, and the fine, applied & performing arts. It seeks to facilitate both the analysis and the augmentation of creative behaviour. CAe also investigates the creation of tools that can enhance the expressive power of the fine and applied arts and furthers our
understanding of aesthetic evaluation, perception and meaning.
Invited artists will be involved in the technical, artistic, and theoretical aspects of this young field. The invited artworks aim to help participants better understand what aesthetics is, what computer technology is currently capable of delivering, and what is involved in the creative process.
Artistic submissions are invited across the broad range of mediums covered by Computational Aesthetics. Specific examples include, but are not limited to:
• artworks that employ real-time visual processing;
• artworks that employ computer graphics on the web;
• 2D or 3D artworks that run on stand-alone consoles;
• virtual worlds created for the web;
• game art pieces that run on stand-alone consoles or the web;
• performances that include live computer graphics and/or live real-
time visuals; and
• artist presentations, posters or screenings that explore topics
related to computer graphics, modeling, and/or real-time visuals
A call for papers was also issued.
NOTE:
Artists should submit either a paper or artwork, but not both, as the intention is to give as much coverage of the arts as possible within the limited space of the venue.
Artwork Submission:
Submitted artworks should be original works created in the past three years.
Artworks should be stand-alone and must be self-contained and run on a
computer console. Web-based work is encouraged and the venue has a wifi
connection. Proposals from performing artists should be submitted as a video
or DVD recording only as there is no performance area/stage available for live
work at the venue. All artists should provide their own computer hardware and
ancillary equipment. Submissions will be reviewed by the Arts Program
international committee (the names of whom will be posted on the website)
and accepted works will be included in a catalogue section of the conference
proceedings which will be published by Eurographics and also appear in the
Eurographics and ACM Digital Libraries.
Please send proposals including: Descriptive overview (proposed catalogue
entry) half page A4; images; sound samples; video; time-based works;
technical specification; artist’s resume/biography and artist’s statement; a
detailed listing of your technical needs, including the equipment you will
provide and your space requirements; a link to a website which shows
examples of the work you will be presenting. Please submit to the online portal
below by the deadline of February 12, 2010.
Please note: Computational Aesthetics has some funding for artist bursaries to
cover the conference entrance fee, but regrets no funding is available for
travel, shipping or artist fees. Artists are expecting to apply for funding from
their local institutions or granting agencies. Invited artists will be sent an
official letter of acceptance. Submissions should comprise of a pdf file as the
descriptive overview (proposed catalogue entry) and be accompanied by a

Bem-vindos ao UM 2009 - Festival Internacional de Intermedia Experimental. O evento tem lugar entre os dias 12 e 15 de Novembro, em vários locais do centro Lisboa. A exposição, num armazém da Fiat, em Santos, continuará até dia 27 de Novembro.
O festival inclui exposições, workshops, conversas, concertos e performances onde participarão músicos, académicos, designers, arquitectos – profissionais de renome nacional e internacional.
Criado em 2008, o UM põe a ênfase nas práticas cruzadas, experimentais e socialmente comprometidas – que correm riscos, expandem ideias e juntam abordagens ou técnicas diferentes. Cada ano o UM é guiado por um tema: em 2009 foca-se no conceito de ‘paisagem’.

Ao longo da década de 1980, paralelamente à sua actividade como pintor, António Olaio (Coimbra, 1963) desenvolveu uma intensa prática de performance. Nas suas performances, ele surgia a dançar e a cantar em playback, incarnando uma espécie de personagem inverosímil de um espectáculo não menos sui generis. Esta actividade performativa despertou nele a vontade de experimentar a actividade musical, o que se veio a concretizar em 1986 através da sua ligação, como vocalista e letrista, ao grupo Repórter Estrábico (com o qual chegou a gravar o disco Uno dos, editado em 1991). Desde 1993, Olaio tem utilizado igualmente o vídeo no seu trabalho, em estreita relação com a música, tomando de empréstimo o videoclip como modelo e subvertendo as convenções desse género com um humor e uma imaginação delirantes. Os seus primeiros vídeos apoiam-se em canções que ele compôs a partir da apropriação de melodias de vários discos anacrónicos de instrumentais country (Post-Nuclear Country, 1993-1994). Para os seus vídeos posteriores, ele recorreu a canções feitas em parceria com João Taborda (com quem gravou já três discos, Loud Cloud, Sit on My Soul e Red Rainbows, editados respectivamente em 1996, 1999 e 2008). O vídeo enquanto medium revelou-se extraordinariamente operativo para Olaio interligar, e mesmo fundir, os diferentes tipos de actividade a que se vinha dedicando desde a década de 1980. A presente exposição – a mais extensa até hoje realizada pelo artista – estabelece um contraponto entre o seu trabalho em vídeo e a sua pintura.
During the 1980s, in parallel to his activity as a painter, António Olaio (Coimbra, 1963) was intensely involved in performance art, dancing and miming songs, and embodying an improbable kind of character from an equally singular show. Since 1993, Olaio has also used video in his work, always closely related with music, borrowing the video clip as a model and subverting the conventions of this genre with his zany humour and imagination. For his later videos, he made use of songs produced in partnership with João Taborda (with whom he has already recorded three CDs, Loud Cloud, Sit on My Soul and Red Rainbows, released in 1996, 1999 and 2008, respectively). Video has proved to be an extraordinarily powerful medium for Olaio, allowing him to interconnect, and even merge together, the different types of activity that he has been engaged in since the 1980s. The current exhibition – the most extensive one held by the artist so far – establishes a counterpoint between his video work and his painting.
