"Durante a nossa pesquisa no arquivo de Mousonturm de Frankfurt [1], no princípio deste ano, encontrámos uma cassete vídeo de “Xavier Le Roy by Jérôme Bel”, de 2001. As elevadas expectativas geradas pelo facto de termos descoberto uma relíquia no vasto e disperso arquivo do centro de performance, desapareceram assim que começámos a ver a cassete VHS: era quase impossível reconstituir a performance, devido ao limitado ângulo da câmara, à inexistência de som, e à fraca qualidade da VHS e da própria filmagem. Para além de um artigo de jornal e de um plano do desenho de luz, o vídeo era o único elemento que supostamente deveria documentar a existência do acontecimento passado, mas que não conseguiu captá-lo na sua totalidade.

A exposição que depois realizámos no Mousonturm mostrava traços e documentos do arquivo que desencadeavam diferentes narrativas num cenário semi-ficcional.
Decidimos não usar a cassete e depressa nos esquecemos da sua existência. Apenas quando começámos a reflectir sobre documentação e sobre a relação bastante delicada que mantém com as obras de arte, é que nos apercebemos que o nosso achado no arquivo se podia afinal transformar numa verdadeira descoberta..." >> Mais infos

Para muitos, Tehching Hsieh é uma figura de culto. Entre 1978 e 1986, o artista fez uma excepcional série de obras de arte em que o assunto e o material usado foi o tempo: cinco One Year Performances. De 1978 a 1979, Hsieh passou um ano trancado numa cela no seu estúdio, sem ler, ouvir rádio, ver televisão ou falar com alguém. De 1980 a 1981, Hsieh picou o ponto a cada hora do dia, interrompendo o sono e qualquer tarefa que estivesse a executar. De 1981 a 1982, Hsieh deambulou pelas ruas de Nova Iorque com uma mochila e um saco-cama, sem entrar em prédios ou abrigos de qualquer natureza. De 1983 a 1984, Hsieh ficou atado pela cintura à artista Linda Montano por uma corda de 2,5 metros. De 1985 a 1986, Hsieh decidiu “não fazer arte, nem falar, olhar, ler ou entrar em museus ou galerias”. Nesta palestra-performance o artista e curador Adrian Heathfield aborda a estética da duração e questiona os modelos do tempo através do qual a performance art tem sido interpretada. Usando como referência a performance ambulatória de 1981, Heathfield regista a interacção entre o documento e o evento, a memória e o presente, para reconfigurar a aparente isolada e periférica performance de Hsieh. Ao fazê-lo, a palestra descobre uma noção de duração vivida... Na conversa que se segue, Hsieh apresenta o seu percurso desde os primeiros trabalhos até às recentes exibições nos museus Guggenheim e MoMA em Nova Iorque e explica o pensamento que existe por trás das suas invulgares obras de arte e o seu compromisso com as longas durações.

Call for the presentation of projects to take part in Interactivos? When Process Becomes Paradigm, as part of the programme for artists and creators of LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial. A maximum of eight proposals will be selected to be collaboratively developed in the workshop that will take place prior to the opening of the exhibition When Process Becomes Paradigm, on April 23rd 2010.

The exhibition When Process Becomes Paradigm reveals a huge shift from a culture based on the concept of manifestation and the final product (industrial society) to a culture of process. The Interactivos? workshop leading up to the exhibition is devoted to the production of artworks which follow the thesis of the exhibition. As in the exhibition, the probes and prototypes made during the Interactivos? workshop are processes that evolve, develop and alter over time. The projects developed during Interactivos? will be shown in the exhibition.

Interactivos?, que se anticipa a la exposición, está dedicado a la producción de obras de arte en línea con este planteamiento teórico. Locus in quo - which means "the place where something happens" - is the general title the artist gave to a body of works based on a particular theme: the sense of places. The project consists of three audio/video installations (Pesa, Cá and Birdsoundcage) and a concert performance (Oikos). These components function both as interconnected, independent works and, as a single cohesive work.

Pesa (“nest” in Estonian) is a three-channel video installation conceived in response to a site-specific performance that Manuela Barile developed at Moks, an artist residency in Estonia between September and October 2008. It consisted on building a nest in several places where the artist felt a sense of belonging (the abandoned house, the abysses of the lake, the rock near the pond, etc). Pesa describes the approach of a person who leaves with sadness and deep awareness the place to which he is attached, to set off in search of his new "home." Pesa is a project dedicated to the house, to the house of our childhood and to all the houses we have abandoned during our life. It is an interrogation on the feeling of abandon and melancholia. The sound composition is made by: sounds of the performer’s voice recorded live in places where the nests were constructed and then abandoned, field recordings made in the places described above and an abstract of an Estonian traditional song about the theme of the abandon.

Cá is a two-channel video installation developed as a consequence of the artist travels since March 2009 in search of abandoned villages in the region of São Pedro do Sul (Portugal), where she is been living since 2006. The abandoned villages are places with a strong identity, are places alive even if they are uninhabited, even if the nature has gradually absorbed them. They are places still alive because full of memory. They are a bridge with the past ... our past. The artist aim was to trace, catch and interrogate the signs of life and memory where everything seems over. Tracking the signs of memory means for her to take back our roots to reconnect us to a sense of authenticity that is being extinguished. The sound composition is made by: sounds of the performer’s voice recorded live in the abandoned villages using a binaural microphone; sounds of the abandoned villages; sounds of other villages (like the sound of a celebration in a public square, of a window opening and closing); abstracts of traditional songs of the region where there are the abandoned villages (S. Pedro do Sul, Portugal)

Birdsoundcage is a sound and video installation. Is a cage for birds recreated through the medium of sound in an empty and sterile room. Inside of it, there is a body flopped to the ground, that in order to survive decides to make a custom-made cage made by prostheses. The prostheses are obtained setting white-patched twigs of wood on her lower and upper limbs. The organic matter, with which the prostheses are made, is the rest of a nest, a place of the past that no longer exists.
