Call for Performance-Projects for the International Performance Festival
in Mainz (Germany)

This year it will be the third time that the International Performance Festival of the performance art depot invites artists from around the world to perform in Mainz, Germany.

This year the festival will be from the 5th to the 8th of May and takes place in the performance art depot, a three-years-young space for contemporary theatre, dance, performance and other forms of contemporary arts. pad offers an unlimited and visible platform for introducing experimental, innovative art works in Mainz. The kernel of the festival is on interactive performance, including light, sound, video art, digital art, multi media and body performance. The forms of performance can range from stage-based piece, solo to durational performance.

The production should be easy to travel, should not include more than about two or three people and should live with simple technical standards (basic light and a sound system with microphones and all standard equipment).

pad will pay a small travel- and performance-fee and will take care of your accommodation and food. You should be willing to travel via cheap travel-opportunities.

Please send DVD or online-video-documentation. Without any kind of motion picture documentation we cannot invite your performance. Deadline March 22.

Liberate Tate: Alternative Tate Audio Tour
Invitation to collaborate on a sound artwork in response to BP’s sponsorship of Tate.

This is a call for proposals for a sound artwork to act as an alternative audio tour/guide for the Tate. We want to install a new acoustic territory inside the Tate, to create a sound artwork that can occupy the Tate space yet exist within a much broader conceptual landscape.

The final artwork will be available online for visitors to download onto MP3 players in advance of their visit to the Tate. ‘Alternative Tate’ will be exhibited in late June 2011.

We welcome expressions of interest from artists working with sound: from Turner Prize winners, to guerilla mash-up DJs, from people writing radio plays, to sound engineers, from field recording specialists to musicians. Although we are framing this as an audio tour, we do not want to restrict the structure of the artwork to a linear, guided narrative – artists are free to interpret the frame of the tour as they see fit.

Liberate Tate has a history of challenging the corporate presence of large oil companies inside cultural institutions, a presence that we feel compromises culture and expression.

We can offer a fee of £1000 and a budget of £1000 to the sound artist/collectives selected, but no production facilities.

The deadline for submissions is April 11th 2011.

A Escrita como Forma - O Uso da Escrita, por Artistas, na Arte (Mesmo) Contemporânea

Programa:
Em modelo aberto de discussão e apresentação com recurso a material impresso, A Escrita como Forma foca-se no modo como artistas plásticos têm vindo a apropriar-se da escrita enquanto linguagem plástica ou de modo a expandir as suas práticas através de literatura, teoria ou crítica de arte. Deixando de lado os escritos de artista bem como a escrita sobre artistas, serão traçadas várias genealogias do uso da escrita por artistas, particularmente desde da década de 1960 a até ao dia de ontem, desdobrando se durante as restantes sessões numa análise da obra de artistas específicos. Pretende-se assim abrir um campo de discussão pouco reflectido no panorama artístico português, permitindo uma aproximação crítica a modelos e práticas que têm vindo gradualmente a ocupar um papel de relevo no panorama da prática artística contemporânea, revelando-se como tal incontornáveis.

Alguns dos artistas abordados serão Ernesto de Sousa, E. M. Melo e Castro, Dan Graham, Liam Gillick, Stephen Willats, Peter Friedl, Hito Steyerl, Frances Stark, entre outros que estarão sobre a mesa, como Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha, Lawrence Weiner, Eduardo Batarda, João Penalva, Falke Pisano ou Matthew Brannon, Keren Cytter, etc. Com a selecção de artistas pretende-se mostrar por um lado uma aproximação a um lado literário ou poético, por outro o modo como artistas têm vindo a ocupar posições de crítica e pensamento habitualmente destinados à curadoria e à teoria. Esta segunda aproximação reflecte tanto a procura por uma certa autonomia da prática artística (relativamente a mediações externas) bem como a viragem para uma prática expandida de pesquisa particularmente a partir da década de 1990. Em paralelo, serão debatidos modelos práticos para a visibilidade destas práticas, como por exemplo periódicos como a F. R. David por Will Holder ou o e-flux journal; arquivos como o do Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona; e estratégias de divulgação e manipulação de conteúdos como praticados pelos Dexter Sinister/DOT DOT DOT).

As sessões terão uma duração de 2h30, mediadas pelo coordenador. Serão facultados aos inscritos material de leitura prévia às sessões, de modo a incentivar a discussão crítica aquando das sessões. Encontrar-se-ão consultáveis durante o período do workshop diversas publicações relacionadas com o assunto e artistas abordados. No final do workshop será emitido um certificado de participação pela FBAUL.

Co-lab Editions, curated by Márcio Carvalho, is a program initiated by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung (director and founder of Savvy Contemporary) and Márcio Carvalho, produced and supported by Savvy Contemporary in cooperation with Hotel25. 
The program will be dedicated to an exchange between artists that use Performance art as one of their primary working media.  

It is important to find a common denominator in cultural differences and the affinities inside the work methodologies.
  
Artists working inside Live Performance, Video performance and Installation Performance will be invited to participate in this project. It will be important to mix these artists, attempting to create possibilities of formal and theory engagements within the SAVVY Contemporary concept and space.
The first editions, between March and December 2011, will be dedicated to an exchange between one artist based in Berlin and another from abroad, as well as a discourse between the West and the non-West. 

By placing together Magnus Logi Kristinsson, with his “list reading” practice, in which he constantly works around the unnoticed, the obvious and the already known, and the non-expressive way that Stefan Riebel deals with information, working with basic questions about complex subjects, I think a very interesting work collaboration will arise.  Both of the artists are researchers working in different medias, having a conceptual starting point to attain very interesting forms, points of view and new perspectives about several subjects.  In both of their works the "Fact" and the "Language" become a poetic ornament, a sculpture, a painting, something physical and alive that brings a strange conscience about small things in live.

João Onofre
Box sized Die featuring No Return

A l'occasion de la première session d'expositions 2011, le hall du Palais de Tokyo accueille une oeuvre de João Onofre. A la fois sculpture et performance Box sized Die featuring No Return, 2007-2011 est constituée d'un cube en métal noir de 183 cm de côté.

Référence directe au travail de sculpture minimale de Tony Smith, et plus particulièrement à l'oeuvre Die, João Onofre explore le potentiel de cette boîte noire en y faisant jouer un groupe de Death Metal. L'oeuvre activée propose un spectacle invisible contenu dans un espace clos. Seuls les résidus des vibrations sonores témoignent de la force intérieure.

La durée de la performance est variable puisque les musiciens mettent en jeu leurs limites physiques en expérimentant l'enfermement et l'asphyxie. João Onofre rend palpable l'expérience d'un objet statique animé tout en privant le visiteur de tout spectacle apparent.

Les performances auront lieu les 24 février, 3, 10, 17 et 24 mars 2011 à 19h30.

O workshop propõe introduzir e experienciar noções de ´ser-relacional` e ´ecologia profunda` na prática da performance. É parte integrante do projecto de investigação ´8 technology`, que reúne idéias particulares de ciência, tecnologia digital, filosofia (oriental e ocidental), arquitectura e arte. Destina-se a  performers, actores, dança, artistas plásticos e visuais, praticantes de artes orientais, arquitectos, activistas, investigadores, filósofos, e qualquer pessoa interessada nas idéias do 8 technology, com ou sem experiência.

O workshop é promovido pelo CIAC – Centro de Investigação em Artes e Comunicação, em parceria com o Goldsmiths College, University of London/ 8technology research project e o c.e.m. – centro em movimento, corpodiem e ArtBetYou.
